Founded in 2002, Sustainable Travel International (STI) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, dedicated to providing education and outreach services that help travelers, travel providers and destinations support environmental conservation and protect cultural heritage while promoting cross-cultural understanding and economic development.
STI's current priorities include:
Provide capacity development through education and training to travelers, the travel trade, and local stakeholders and assist them in making positive contributions to environmental conservation and socio-cultural sustainability.
Develop, adopt, and promote sustainable tourism standards and industry best practices through the Sustainable Tourism Eco-Certification Program™ (STEP) and other initiatives that are aligned with the Global Sustainable Tourism Criteria.
Support the establishment of local travelers' philanthropy projects and investments in renewable energy, energy efficiency and forestry-related carbon offset projects that offer co-benefits and help to mitigate unavoidable greenhouse gas emissions.
Empower destinations to use tourism and related market-based solutions to support sustainable development and generate tangible, measurable results that affect change.
CONSERVATION
INTERNATIONAL (CI)
CI’s mission is to conserve
the Earth's living heritage – our global biodiversity – and
to demonstrate that human societies are able to live harmoniously with
nature.
The Future for Life Strategy
Conservation
International ’s team consists of innovative problem-solvers whose
work is based on cutting-edge science, comprehensive partnerships, and
concern for human well-being. Guided by these three principles,
valuable species are safeguard, important landscapes and seascapes are
preserved, and communities that care for and rely on Earth's natural
resources are supported. To reach these goals, CI focuses on three
strategies: dedication to innovation, raising awareness about
conservation, and maintaining business-like effectiveness.
The Future for Life
Strategy goals are:
• Save species in
the most biologically diverse and irreplaceable regions of the world,
which contributes to the vital balance of all living things. We are on
track to ensure that there are no vertebrate extinctions where CI works
between 2005 and 2010.
• Conserve
landscapes and seascapes – from tropical forests to crucial
coastal habitats – to support human well-being, biological
diversity, and natural resource preservation. To date, we have
conserved over 143 million terrestrial acres and 80 million acres of
marine area.
• Empower local
communities to ensure that responsible and effective use of natural
resources happens around the world, for the benefit of local people. We
have already succeeded in helping safeguard 32 million acres of
indigenous area.
• Develop innovative
methods to address issues such as climate change, human well-being, and
corporate best practices. In 11 countries we are undertaking carbon
projects to benefit local communities, protect biodiversity, and
address climate concerns.
• Raise awareness of
a conservation ethic and build a shared mindset in governments,
development institutions, corporations, partner organizations, and
local communities. A global consensus is emerging around concerns like
climate change and the availability of fresh water, a movement in which
we play a key role.
• Guarantee
effectiveness by developing a robust organizational infrastructure to
support our work at home, in the field, and around the world. Over 85
percent of CI expenses go directly to conservation programs and only 4
percent to fundraising
